Earth Science – Class Syllabus

Welcome Back!  This class will take you into a discovery of Earth Science.  Here we will learn about Astronomy, Geology, Meteorology, and Oceanography.  The syllabus will outline the course and serve as a road map to your success.  Attitude is everything and you will get out of this class what you put into it.  Remember, we come here to learn.

Rules - All rules of NHS will be followed while in class and on campus

1. Come to class on time. Be seated and ready to go when the bell rings.
2. Attend to personal needs before coming to class: locker, office, library, friends, bathroom, etc.
   1. Bathroom pass – don’t ask if:
      1. it’s gone – one person at a time
      2. first 10 min – you should have gone during passing period

• last 10 min – you can wait until passing period

1. we’re doing something – you should be doing it

3. Remain seated and on task. Some labs or activities require you to move around the classroom.
4. No food, gum chewing, or drinks allowed out in class. Leave them outside or in your backpacks.
5. Bring required materials every day Textbook, study guide, and science notebook will be needed every day unless otherwise told by the teacher.
6. Listen to who is talking. Be respectful when the teacher or other students are addressing the class. Quiet talking may be allowed or required at times. 
7. Do your own work. Students caught cheating will receive a zero and a phone call home. Both the student who shares his work and the person who copies it will suffer the same consequences.  I expect you to do your own work and to be sure no one can copy it.
8. No electronics are allowed to be out in the open in class or on.: If I see it or hear it, I will take it to the office.
9. Perfume, body spray, cologne, other sprays, make-up, and mirrors are not allowed to be used or seen in class.
10. Always do your best. Complete assignments on time and with your best effort.
11. Respect each other and the learning environment.

Absences

Once enrolled in this class, you are responsible for all course work and assignments.  If you are out of class for any reason, it is your responsibility to complete the missed work or test.  See me on the day you return. You have as many days of excused absences to make up an assignment or test. If you were present when a quiz or test is announced, you must take it on the scheduled day – even if you just returned from an absence.

Tardies

Tardies will affect your participation and can result in detention.

Classwork/Homework

Your work must be present and completed by the beginning of class on the day it is due.  All work must be legible, neat, and complete for full credit.  We usually turn in all the classwork/homework at the end of the chapter (before the test) in a Homework Packet.  It will include things like Vocabulary, Review Questions, PODs, worksheets, notes, labs, etc.

Late Work Policy

Homework assignments will be checked and stamped “on time” before we review the homework.  No stamp = ½ credit.  Homework is due at the beginning of class.  Otherwise you may complete the assignment late for half credit.  No late work will be accepted beyond two days.  Work due on the day of an unexcused absence receives no credit.  Tests or homework missed for an excused tardy or partial excused absence during the school day must be made up at lunch or after school the same day.

Labs

We will have several lab activities to provide hands-on learning.  Participation in labs is necessary and included in the overall grade.  Lab reports will be submitted.  Lab safety is extremely important.  Messing around during a lab will earn you a zero.  If you break it you buy it.

PODs

Quizzes given every day to keep up to date on the material and to prepare for tests.

Summary Paragraphs

At the end of the period, Think, Pair-Share, Write, and Revise a paragraph on the main idea of the lesson and/or question posed by the teacher.

Tests

Content will be derived from lecture notes, discussions, labs, PODs, and videos; all of which are driven by the book.  Therefore keeping up with the reading is important.  We will test regularly on material and incorporate two comprehensive semester final exams.

Participation

Includes attention during lecture, contributing to a discussion, cooperating in group work, doing the right thing at the right time, and generally being involved in the class.  By doing so, you will be more inclined to become interested in the class and learn something new.

Course Content

Earth Science is divided into 4 major parts:

      1.) Astronomy: Planets, stars, galaxies, etc.

      2.) Geology: Plate Tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, rocks, and minerals

      3.) Meteorology: Weather and climate

      4.) Oceanography: The ocean floor, salinity, tides, and currents

Ciencias de la Tierra – Programa de Estudios

¡Bienvenido de nuevo! Esta clase te llevará a un descubrimiento de Ciencias de la Tierra. Aquí aprenderemos acerca de Astronomía, Geología, Meteorología, y Oceanografía. El plan de estudios esbozará el curso y servirá de hoja de ruta para tu éxito. La actitud lo es todo y obtendrás de esta clase lo que entregaste. Recuerda, aquí venimos para aprender.

Reglas - Todas las reglas de NHS se seguirán mientras estás en clase y en el plantel

1. Llega a tiempo a clase. Siéntate y prepárate para cuando suene la campana.
2. Encárgate de tus necesidades personales antes de venir a clase: casillero, oficina, biblioteca, amigos, baño, etc.
   1. Pase para ir al baño – no pidas permiso si:
      1. El pase no está – una persona a la vez
      2. Es dentro de los primeros 10 min. – debiste haber ido durante el cambio de período

• Solo faltan 10 min. – puedes esperar hasta el cambio de período

1. Estamos hacienda algo – debes estar trabajando

3. Permanece sentado y trabajando en la tarea. Algunos laboratorios o actividades requieren moverse dentro del salón de clases.
4. No se permiten alimentos, chicles, o bebidas dentro del salón de clases. Déjalos afuera o en tu mochila.
5. Trae los materiales necesarios todos los días Libro de Texto, guía de estudio, y el cuaderno de ciencias serán necesarios todos los días, a menos que el profesor indique otra cosa.
6. Escucha a quien está hablando. Ser respetuoso cuando el profesor u otros estudiantes se están dirigiendo a la clase. Se puede permitir hablar suavemente o a veces es requerido.
7. Haz tu propio trabajo. A los estudiantes que se les agarre haciendo trampa recibirán un cero y una llamada por teléfono a casa. Tanto el estudiante que comparte su trabajo como la persona que lo copia sufrirá las mismas consecuencias. Espero que hagas tu propio trabajo y te asegures que nadie pueda copiarlo.  
8. No se permite tener dispositivos electrónicos afuera en la clase.: Si lo veo o escucho, lo llevaré a la oficina.
9. No se permite usar o traer perfume, aerosol del cuerpo, colonia, otros aerosoles, maquillaje, y los espejos a la clase.
10. Siempre haz tu mejor esfuerzo. Completa las tareas a tiempo y con tu mejor esfuerzo.
11. Respetarse unos a otros y el entorno de aprendizaje.

Ausencias

Una vez inscrito en esta clase, eres responsable de todo el trabajo y asignaturas del curso. Si faltas a clase por cualquier razón, es tu responsabilidad completar el trabajo o prueba perdida. Ven a verme el día que regreses. Tienes la misma cantidad de días de ausencias justificadas para reponer una tarea o examen. Si estás presente cuando se anuncia un cuestionario o prueba, debes tomarlo en el día programado - incluso si acabas de regresar de una ausencia.

Retrasos

Los retrasos afectarán tu participación y puede resultar en detención.
