Geometry (Period 1,3-5)

Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Geometry is a one year college prep course that will allow students to be promoted to Algebra II next year. The Math Department recommends that a student maintains a minimum grade of 75% in order to be placed in Algebra II. Please encourage your student to keep up with his/her assignments and get help when needed. The course covers a wide range of topics including: Connecting reasoning and proof; Identifying and applying congruent triangles; Connecting proportion and similarity; Applying right triangles and trigonometry; Analyzing circles; Investigating surface area, volume, loci and coordinate transformations.

Throughout the course, problem solving will play an important role as a tool to develop higher thinking skills. Calculators will be required; however, mental math will be reinforced in order for the student to develop a better understanding of numbers and problem set-up.

GRADING: Each semester, grades will be weighed according to the following categories.

Tests 30%, quizzes 20% (the 2 lowest quiz scores will be dropped at the end of each semester), portfolio 20%, activities 10%, homework/classwork 10%, class participation 10%

The final semester grade will be based on the percentage of total points possible.

Grading Scale:
90-100%=A 70-79%=C
80 - 89%=B 65-69%=D

HOMEWORK: Homework is an important part of the final grade and reflects on assessment performance. It will be assigned regularly, and I expect it to be returned. Homework is graded on effort not on the number of correct answers. All the process must be shown in order to receive credit.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Geometry set (ruler, compass, protractor), 3-ring binder, graph paper, 2 lead pencils, color pencils, scientific calculator. All these materials can be found in the “99 ¢” store.

DISCIPLINE: Each student is held accountable for his/her own behavior. I will inform parents if there is a problem.
