International Baccalaureate Higher Level Studio Art – 1st year
CBEDS Title: Art & Design
Path: Visual Arts
Prerequisites: Must have Introduction to Art and Digital Art or 3-D Design,
with a grade of B or higher or teacher recommendation.
Length: This is a two-hour course, the first year of two years.
Lab Fee: $40 per semester
Course Description:
Part A: Studio Work
1. In this course artistic understanding and expression is learned through drawing, painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and computer graphics or video.
2. A minimum of eleven finished pieces are to be completed. During this time they are to explore the breadth of art reviewing much of what they learned in Introduction to Art and Digital Art or 3-D Design.
3. Include seven weeks of instruction on figure drawing from live models.
Part B: Research Workbook
1. Students are to focus on a theme or area of study as it relates to the artwork they are producing and explore its depth and breadth.
2. The work is to show personal growth and therefore cannot be created at the end but continually throughout the course.
3. There is to be no editing.
4. False starts and weaker work are expected at the beginning.
5. All sources must be acknowledged.
Course Aims
First year, the students will create/learn:
1. In Visual Communication the students will express, through conscious and subconscious means, a specific idea and its various corollaries in the creation of a minimum of twelve pieces for the concentration section.
2. In Problem Solving and Creating Unique Art, the students will push themselves and help others in group critiques to try new solutions, different techniques, other mediums and develop a personal style.
3. In Appreciation of World Art History and Aesthetics the students will show a use of multi-cultural concepts and techniques in the projects they are working on.
