International Baccalaureate Higher Level Studio Art – 2nd year

Prerequisites: Must have had 1st year I.B.H.L. Studio Art or I.B.S.L. Art History, with a grade of B or higher or teacher recommendation.
Length: This is a two-hour course, the 2nd year of two years.
Lab Fee: $40 per semester
Course Description:
Part A: Studio Work
In this course artistic understanding and expression is learned through drawing, painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and computer graphics or video.
1. A minimum of sixteen finished pieces are to be completed in the second year. In creating these pieces they are to concentrate on a single theme exploring its depth.
2. May participate in figure drawing lessons and produce 2 figurative studies in relation with theme.
1. Students are to focus on a theme or area of study as it relates to the artwork they are producing and explore its depth and breadth.
2. The work is to show personal growth and therefore cannot be created at the end but continually throughout the course.
3. There is to be no editing.
4. False starts and weaker work are expected at the beginning.
5. All sources must be acknowledged
Second year, the students will create/learn:
1. An In-depth study of a single theme and its variations creating a minimum of sixteen works of art. Some of the Previous Themes have been:

e. Power of the Feminine in Fashion
f. Feminine Abuse
g. The Divine in nature
h. Street Art as a Political Message
i. Personality Types in Masks
j. Dysfunctional Personalities
k. Graphic Novel – Detective
l. Graphic Novel – Heroine
m. Through the Eyes of a Child
n. Visual Representation of ___________’s Music
2. In Visual Communication the students will express, through conscious and subconscious means, a specific idea and its various corollaries in the creation of a minimum of sixteen pieces for the concentration section.
3. In Problem Solving and Creating Unique Art, the students will push themselves and help others in group critiques to try new solutions, different techniques, other mediums and develop a personal style.
4. In Appreciation of World Art History and Aesthetics the students will show a use of multi-cultural concepts and techniques in the projects they are working on.
