Course Description

International Baccalaureate Higher level Film

Program: Arts and Communication

CBEDS Title: Broadcasting Technology

Path:  Visual Arts

Prerequisites: Broadcast Movie Production with a grade of B or higher or Teachers recommendation.

Length:  Two hour course for two years.           

Lab Fee:  $40/semester

 

Course Description:

This course is designed to give you what you need to pass the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Film test.  You will create; one excellent movie, which will be shown at the movie premier and a dossier for a hypothetical documentary on an aspect of Film Theory or History. You will have to rent 4 movies to view for at least one month and Provide refreshments for the premier of your movie.

3)     Short Gyide to wrtiting about Film, by Timothy Corrigan

Expectations

1)     Your Internal Assessment is a Production Portfolio which is 50% of your grade:

a)     An original film

i)       The video is to be at least 6-7 minutes including titles & credits

ii)      Rational (Synopsis) no more than 100 words

iii)     Script (Screenplay)

iv)    Storyboard

v)     Movie production

b)     The trailer for the film is to be 40 – 60 seconds

i)       Rational (Synopsis) no more than 100 words

ii)      Trailer production

c)      A written commentary of no more than 1,750 words

(1)    It is to encompass and connect both movie and trailer

d)     Movie Premier on April 9th 2011

2)     External Assessment between April 11th through the 16th:

a)     Independent Study; 25% of your grade

i)       Prepare for a documentary production (no movie) on an aspect of film theory or history based on the study of 4 films from 4 different countries. Choose your four movies from these lists which will be given to you:

(a)    American Film Institute’s top 100 movies

(b)    American Film Institute’s 10 categories of top 10

(c)    Academy Award winners Best Foreign Films

(d)    Best 103 Chinese films

(e)    Best 100 Iberian Films

(f)     Best 100 Japanese films

(g)    Foreign Cinema Recommendations and Film Theorists

ii)      Write a dossier composed of;

(1)    A rational (Synopsis) no more than 100 words

(2)    A script (Screenplay) 12- 15 pp clearly indicating both;

(a)    Audio

(b)    Visual elements

(3)    An annotated list of sources

b)     Oral presentation; 25% of your grade

(1)    15 minute long analysis of an extract from one of the four chosen films

(2)    The extract is to be discussed within the context of the film as a whole

(3)    The extract is to be continuous and no longer than 5 minutes

(4)    The extract will not be shown in the 15 minutes thus your analysis will have to be very descriptive.
