Class GuideliNes

Fall 2015-16

Class goals

You will emerge from this class knowing more than you do today. You will be challenged and, at times frustrated but (if you choose) you will also experience success. Remember that I am here to support you- if you have questions, comments, and concerns please, please come talk to me.

Academics

Homework

Be prepared to have homework frequently. I will not correct work that which does not visually reflect hard work (no different colored inks, ripped, stained, or crumpled pages). Pay attention to your heading: Name, Course/Period, Instructor, Date.  Calendars with homework will be passed out the first week.

Grading.

Your grades are will reflect the effort that YOU put into the assignments and homework, and how well you perform on all forms of assessment, such as tests and quizzes. I will provide rubrics and grading guides for all assignments, projects, and written tasks.

Letter Grades

I do use plus and minus grades. I will not round up. The grade you get is the grade you earn. Will reflect the following percentages:

            A= 90-100%

            B= 80-89%

            C= 70-79%

            D= 60-69%

            F= 59% or lower

Materials

You need to bring the following to CLASS EVERYDAY:

1.pens in blue or black ink

2.a notebook or binder with divider

Sections will be labeled reading, writing, and projects

3.play or novel

Attendance and Make- Up Work

It is your responsibility to come to class everyday. It is also your responsibility to keep track of any missing assignments. We will be covering a great deal of material in class so good attendance is the key for a successful High School experience. If you are absent with an excused absence, you have two days to make-up all your missed work. If you are absent from class, consult your calendar to see exactly what you missed or check the makeup work box. It is you responsibility to make-up tests and quizzes on you own time, i.e. during tutoring before school at 7:25 or during lunch.

Every last Friday of the month is a make-up day for homework. You can turn in homework on that day for ½ credit.

Academic Honesty Policy

At Nogales High School, we have great pride in what we do. Because of this pride, there will be a zero tolerance policy toward cheating and plagiarism. I will strictly adhere to the NHS policy. Violation of this rule will result in a zero on the assignment and a parent meeting.

Tardy Policy

BE ON TIME TO CLASS. Tardies will not be tolerated and will result in a community detention after school.

Behavior

Classroom Rules:

1. Try.

2. Be helpful, supportive, and respectful (that includes appropriate language) to every classmate and to me.

3. Be in class at the appropriate time.

4. Please do not bring any electronic device to class. I reserve the right to remove them from your possession if necessary.

5. Absolutely do not throw anything in this classroom.

Progressive Discipline  Policy

I believe in giving students the benefit of the doubt, so the first offense is always a warning. We will set up class norms and everyone must agree  on these  norms. Students that violate the norms will face consequences.

Tier One- Verbal Warning from either student or teacher, 15 Minute Detention, group separation/isolation

Tier Two- Thirty Minute before/after school detention, parent phone call, parent/teacher meeting,

Tier Three- Referral, Parent/Admin/Teacher meeting, period suspension

Detentions

Detentions are penalties for choices within the classroom. Good choices will be rewarded accordingly, and poor choices will be rewarded with detentions. As a student, your detention will be served at 7:25 or 2:50 in Room W12. Unserved penalties will be dealt with accordingly.

Dress Code

Nogales High prides itself on the appropriateness of student conduct; students are expected to abide by the school dress code at all times. The first offense will result in a warning. The second offense will result in being sent up to the office. Parents will be contacted with the second offense.

Communication

Appointments

I have an open door policy! If you ever need to see me outside of normal tutoring hours, make an appointment with me. We can meet before school, after school, or at lunch. I can be reached at [email protected] or

Remind

I ask that all student join Remind- I keep office hours on Remind and send class reminders via text. This application does not give me your email or number- it is just a nice way of communicating with students. Please sign up via the handout.

Email and Phone

The best way to communicate with me is through the Remind Chat, my email [email protected], [email protected], or the school phone, (626) 965-3437 ext. 3716. My goal is make sure that I answer all questions and the expectations are clear. I will respond within 24 hours.

Students With Disabilities

If you have a disability or special need, please advocate for yourself. I want my students to feel secure and safe at NHS. I am flexible and will make accommodations as needed.
