Chapter 6 Quiz Date Change

Hi ladies and gentlemen,

Because I will be out this Friday for training, I will be moving the Chapter 6 reading quiz to Monday morning.  Please note that Monday is a minimum day, therefore period 2 starts at 7:46 NOT 8:02.  If you are not in class on time, you will have to take a 0 for that quiz.  There are no excuses for being late that day. Chapter 7 quiz will still be on Tuesday, and the remainder of the quizzes will stay on the same days as of right now.

Saturation paper assignment- Important Moment

Due at the end of the period Tuesday:

In the life of your person from history, you need to choose what you believe to be the most life changing and significant moment, either good or bad, that your person experienced.  This can be something small that kick started a slew of events, or it can be something major.  The most important thing you need to make sure of is that YOU are choosing this event, not googling it for others to decide.  Once you have decided which moment you will be writing about, you will answer the following questions in a one-page response, due Tuesday.

1. What is the moment that you chose in your person's life? Explain in detail what the situation was, what happened, who was involved, etc.
2. Why was this moment important or life changing?
3. How are you going to write from this perspective?  How will you MAKE this moment come alive?  Remember, you were not there when that moment happened. You will need to be creative in coming up with dialogue between people, narration, inner thoughts, etc.

Reading Calendar 14-15

Attached is the reading calendar for The Great Gatsby.  All reading assignments are due the day they are on the calendar.  Come to class already having read the chapters and be prepared to take a quiz first thing on those chapters.  If you are absent for a quiz, you will not be allowed to make it up.  Please note the final test date for the novel and make sure you are in class and caught up on the reading.

Macbeth Final Essay Introduction

Introduction:
The information presented in your introduction paragraph needs to be presented as if the reader has no prior knowledge of your topic.  Make sure everything you are writing about is clearly stated for any person to understand.  Once you have written the most basic background information about your topic, begin explaining why that information is important for the reader to understand.
For example, if you decide that the topic of your essay is Fate, you will first need to explain Fate to the reader as if they have no idea what Fate is.  Once you have done that, then you need to spend a few sentences connecting what Fate is to why the reader should care and how the concept of Fate is connected to what you are going to prove.

Thesis statement template:
In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the role/purpose of the Weird Sisters/Witches is (1) to present the destiny/Fate to Macbeth (2)to set the play's actions in motion because ___(1)___, ___(2)___, and ___(3)___.

Your listed information needs to be the three main reasons you believe your choice in the beginning of the prompt (the answer to the question).  The three points you have chosen will be the topics for your three body paragraphs.

For example:
A few of the options you may use for supporting ideas would be:
-Macbeth was not superstitious before meeting the Witches and hearing the prophecies.
-Fate is not something that can be changed or altered.
-The purpose of the Witches is to deliver Fate, which stems from the definition of the name they are given: Weird Sisters.
-Lady Macbeth gets the idea to help Macbeth become King from the idea that he could become King, but had never had the idea before the prophecy.
-The possibility of Macbeth naturally becoming King without interference is none because of the natural succession of power.
-Lady Macbeth's power-hungry nature is what creates the idea to kill for the crown.

There are plenty of other reasons and events that could support your idea.  Make sure whichever 3 you choose there is evidence and you can find quotations from Act I to support your ideas.

The Crucible- Who's to Blame? Essay

Introduction paragraph:
Because you are introducing your topic as though your reader has NO information about it, you need to make sure you are clear with your information.  First, you need to decide what your topic is.  After answering the prompt and deciding what you are going to prove in your essay, then you can begin writing your introductory information.  Make sure your first few sentences are clear.  Then, start adding more details to your information.  Why does the reader need to care about your topic?  Why is the information you are presenting important for the reader to understand?
Thesis Statement:
Complete the following sentence according to your answer to the prompt.

In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, _(Person)_ is to blame for the mass hysteria and innocent deaths in Salem, MA because ____(1)___, ____(2)___, and ___(3)__. The information listed as (1), (2), and (3) will be the topics for your body paragraphs, listed in that order.

Final Exam Due Date

Attention ALL Juniors and Seniors:

Your final essay will be due by the first ten minutes of your class period Monday, December 8.  There will be ZERO excuses accepted for an absence, tardy, or untyped essay.  If you arrive to class ON TIME with a typed MLA formatted essay in hand, your essay will be worth the full 4 points.  If you show up after the first ten minutes of class with a typed MLA formatted essay, your essay will only be worth 2 points.  If you do not show up to class that day, then you will earn a ZERO for your final exam.  If you show up with an uptyped essay, you will earn a ZERO for the final exam.  There are absolutely NO excuses for not attending class that day OR not having an essay typed.  You will NOT be allowed to turn an essay in for credit after the period is over.   This is your only warning, and there will be no discussion of "what ifs" at any point.

I highly recommend being responsible and typing/printing your essay BEFORE the weekend.  Teachers will not be asked by students to print an essay, and no student should wait until Monday to use the computer lab.  This is your FINAL EXAM grade; therefore I recommend taking this seriously.

Essay grades and Final Semester One grades will be posted before you leave for Winter Break.  Grades are not subject to argument and will not be changed in the grade book once posted.

Happy studying.
